Zinio: A Free Online Newsstand through Your Library!

ZinioZinio is an exciting new service offered by the Webster Groves Public Library, along with the Municipal Library Consortium.  You can browse and checkout the current issue of over 65 magazine titles.  There are no holds, waiting periods or due dates!  Each issue that you check out will always be available to you in your Zinio account.

Set up your free account today by following these steps:

1. Go to www.wgpl.org and click on ‘Zinio.’

2. Choose ‘Create New Account’ in the top right corner of the screen.

3. Enter your entire library card number and click ‘Next.’

4. Then, enter your information.  You must have a password to complete the signup process for Zinio. Your password must have at least 7 characters & include letters and numbers.

5. Next, browse magazines and click on the cover of the magazine you would like. Then, click on ‘Checkout.’

Tip: The most recent issue will be shown as you browse the list of magazines.  Browse back issues (starting July 2013) by clicking on “Back Issues Available” under the cover of the magazine.

6. At this point, you will finish your checkout by creating an account with Zinio.  This allows you to access all magazines that you check out from the library.

Tip: Use the same e-mail address and password that you used to sign up for the account with the library.  This will make things easier when you try to sign into your account to checkout and access your magazine issues.

7. After you have checked out your magazine, you will have the option to “Keep Browsing” or “Start Reading.”  Clicking on “Keep Browsing” will allow you to continue checking out magazines.  Clicking on “Start Reading” will take you to your Zinio library with all checked out magazines.

8. Magazines issues that are checked out will always be available in your account, unless you manually choose to delete them.  Magazines can be deleted by going to your Zinio account and clicking on ‘Edit your reading list’ at the top of the page.  Click on the red x over the magazines you would like to delete.

9. After the magazine is checked out you can read it in your browser by clicking on the cover of the magazine, or you can download the app.

10.  Download the app for your computer (PC or Mac) by going to www.zinio.com/apps.  Zinio Reader 4 will allow you to read magazines that you’ve downloaded onto your desktop or laptop without an Internet connection.  The app also allows you to easily access your magazines from the home screen of your computer.

* Always use the link from http://www.wgpl.org to Zinio to check out new issues.  Accessing magazines from Zinio will only show you issues for purchase.

The Zinio app is available for iPhone, iPad, Android, Kindle Fire/Fire HD, NOOK HD/HD+ and Blackberry Playbook.

Access the app by going to your App Store (Apple used in the example images).  When you open the app, Zinio App Signinsign in using the account information that you created for the Zinio site in the web browser.

Zinio App AccountAfter you have signed into your account a list of the magazines that you have checked out will be shown. Click on the arrow next to the magazine to download it to your device.

The Zinio app for your tablet or smart phone allows you to read your previously downloaded magazines without an Internet connection.

*Like your Zinio account online, you will not be able to browse the library collection in the app.  Accessing magazines through the app will only show magazines that are available for purchase.

Dig Into Something New at WGPL

BOOK LOGO (628x640)The Webster Groves Public Library will start sign-ups for the Adult Summer Reading Program on June 1st.  Everyone with a Webster Groves (or Municipal Library Consortium card) 18 or over is encouraged to sign up!

The theme this summer is ‘Dig Into Something New.’  This is a great chance to try out authors and genres that you usually don’t read! Each week we’ll have a different display featuring two genres along with a list of suggested reading.  Keep up with our blog throughout the summer for our lists of recommended reading.

For every book you read this through August 15 (up to 5 books total) you’ll be entered in the grand prize drawing for a Kindle Fire.  Kindle Fire

Don’t You Just Love a Mystery?

We invite you to go beyond Agatha Christie and discover new and local Missouri mystery writers.  We’ll be discussing a variety of styles, from thrillers, futuristic, humorous, and historical to cozy mysteries, so you’re sure to find something you like!  Attendees will have the chance to win signed copies from some of these exciting authors.  Light refreshments will be provided.

Dig Into Pinterest

Come learn about the social media site Pinterest, a site for ‘collecting and organizing the things you love!’  We’ll walk you through the basics to set up your  profile and start pinning.  Reserve your space today to guarantee a library computer for the class by calling 314. 961. 3784.  No need for registration if you plan on bringing a personal laptop or tablet.

Book Club

Join us the first Saturday and first Tuesday of each month for book discussion!  Book discussion is free and open to everyone.

Rules:

1. Read books or listen to audiobooks checked out of a library through Thursday, August 15.  E-books may be borrowed from the library’s website: overdrive.mlcstl.org

2. Record reading in your reading log by writing down the titles and authors of books you have finished. (The reading log, along with other materials will be given to you when you register).

3. Earn extra grand prize tickets by attending special library programs this summer or by writing a book review.

4. Return your grand prize tickets to the circulation desk by Thursday, August 15 for your chance to win. You may only collect one grand prize.

5. Prizes for participating in the program and finishing at least 3 books may be collected between July 31 and  August 20.

Borrow Audio and eBooks on your Kindle Fire

Search:

1. Open your web browser, and go to http://overdrive.mlcstl.org to browse new eBooks and Audiobooks. You can search by Subject or Collection, or type in an author or title in the search bar at the top of the page.

The Advanced Search option (click on the magnifying glass icon) allows you to filter your results by format, subject, title, author and availability.

2. When books are displayed, you will see either a blue banner with “Available” for items you can check-out now or a white banner with “Wait list” for items you can only place holds on. To find out if the item is an eBook or Audiobook, look at the information underneath the title image. The headphones icon symbolizes an Audiobook and the books icon symbolizes an eBook.

  • If a book is currently checked out, you can place a hold. Click on the word “Place a hold” underneath the title image and you will be prompted to sign in, if you have not already. Confirm your e-mail address to receive a notice when it becomes available.
  • When you receive a notification that your hold is available, you will have 3 days to go to your Loans page (books icon) and check out the item from the Holds section. If you have opted for automatic check-outs, the item will appear in your check-outs already ready for you to download.

3. If you are looking for a book that you can download immediately, choose to view available titles by going to the Collections drop-down menu near the top left corner of the screen.

4. After you have found a book, click on the word “Borrow” underneath the title image.

5. Next, you will be prompted to sign in with your library card number to check out the book, if you have not already.

6. After you have signed into your account, you will be taken to your Loans page (books icon).

7. For an eBook, click on “Choose a Format” and select Kindle Book.

8. At this point you will be redirected to the Amazon.com website. Choose “Get Library Book” and enter the Amazon e-mail address and password that was used to register your Kindle.

9. Your title will be downloaded to the carousel on the home screen of your Kindle. Click on the title to open the book and start reading.

  • When you are finished with the book, you can press and hold on the title from the carousel. A menu will open that will give you the option to remove it from the carousel.
  • There’s no need to remember due dates.  Books will automatically be returned when the loan has finished!

 

Downloading Audiobooks (and EPUB eBooks):

1. DownOverDrive Appload the OverDrive app from the Amazon appstore.
This app will allow you to download additional formats on your Kindle Fire, including MP3 Audiobooks and EPUB eBooks.

2. If you plan on downloading EPUB eBooks, you will have to authorize your device with an Adobe ID when you first download an eBook.  The Adobe Digital Editions box will appear when you click on download.  (The Adobe Authorization can also be accessed in the app settings).

3. If you don’t have an ID, select “Get a free Adobe ID.” You will only have to complete this step once.
You will not be able to download EPUB eBooks without creating an Adobe ID.

4. Open the app menu to navigate between your “bookshelf” and “Get Books +”
The app functions the same as the website, but there are a couple initial set-up steps for the app. You will not be able to download Kindle format books from the OverDrive app.

5. Open “Get Books +,” and find the Municipal Library Consortium to start browsing through the OverDrive app. Remember to select MP3 or EPUB when downloading your titles!

6. Your bookshelf is where you will find your downloaded Audiobooks and EPUB eBooks.
